If we haven't previously met, I'm Caley Moore, the founder of Moore Premium Meats.

My family and I started as a small Ostrich farm in Southern Ontario (near Hanover). We decided to rent some land and get some livestock, and with the unusual suggestion from my son (which turned out to be a great idea), we purchased some breeder Ostriches, an incubator and hatcher and we were on our way.
In a matter of 3 months we had purchased birds, found land, and were in the midst of building a fence. This was a big change for us, but the stars seemed to be lining up and for the first time in my life I felt like I was on the right track.
We raised these breeders, hatched babies and had a grand old time on the farm for three years.

I'm so glad we had the opportunity to start our small farm on this property! It allowed us to go to farmer's markets, experience farm life, start building our business, and have the opportunity to get out of town. We currently live on a small in-town lot and still dream of moving out to a farm.
But then the fateful day arrived, our landlords were selling the farm...
Realistically, we knew it would come one day. It was only rented land and we weren't able to secure a lease. We had been trying to build relationships and find new opportunities for a year or two.
But every opportunity we found for a new piece of land seemed stuck. They often were wary of our ostriches, or they didn't want new fencing put up, or for a slew of various other reasons, it wasn't going to work.
After fighting like hell to keep them, in the end the birds had to be sent to the butcher as we closed our farm operations. However, I had seen how much promise there was in the business and was not ready to let it go. We started purchasing ostrich meat from other Ontario farms that we had created relationships with over the past few years.
Then we decided that with all the problems finding land, we would need a secure and stable place to raise our ostriches. As a result, we would need to purchase a small farm before we could get back into the ostrich farming game. The goal is to purchase a farm in the next 1-2 years.
It was such a great experience. My kids learned so much about life and they just can't wait until we are able to start our ostrich farm again. I'm so impressed with them. We're all in this together. :)

And then I started thinking... what else can I do? I'm good at research....I'm good at finding information and opportunities...I'm good at talking with people and starting new projects...
Hmm...what about a buyers club?
But not just any buyers club...one that focuses on things you just can't get. Unique meats that you can't find in stores like venison and bison. Heritage breed animals that you will never get a chance to try under normal circumstances. I've been researching a lot of these opportunities since we started our farm.
Once, I read an article on "the best tasting chicken that you will never get to try." Well, why not? The challenge is on now, and I'm ready to make it happen. My goal is to find these opportunities and bring them directly to my buyers list.
I chose to charge a membership fee to cover my expenses, but it's also so I don't have to add any mark-ups to the cost of the meat. If there are any bulk deals to be had they will be passed on to my members. Meat is expensive enough on a good day.
The truth is, small farmers need the help. starting a farm over the past three years has really opened our eyes to how difficult it is to keep a farm running in a time that favours the big operations. These farms often have trouble finding enough buyers for their products, and if they are dedicated to supporting heritage breads, they may have an even harder time (and more expenses to boot).
So that's what we are here for! We are going to help these farmers and help our members too!
I hope you like this idea as much as I do. I'm so excited to start sourcing these unique, yet local meats for you.
Sincerely,
Caley Moore
